Fulfilling a RCOG recommendation to cut the episiotomy at 60 degrees to the midline at crowning.
“Where episiotomy is indicated, the mediolateral technique is recommended, with careful attention to ensure that the angle is 60 degrees away from the midline when the perineum is distended”
Two recently published systematic reviews find that the EPISCISSORS-60™ reduced OASIS (Obstetric anal sphincter injuries)
Jennifer Cole and colleagues from Coventry, England published their SR in the prestigious European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Biology. They found that the EPISCISSORS-60™ reduced OASIS by up to 50%. In all studies, operators were able to consistently achieve post-suturing episiotomy angles of more than 40°.

Olga Divakova and colleagues from Middlesbrough published their research in the prestigious International Urogynecology Journal. EPISCISSORS-60™ reduced OASIS by an absolute 4%. EPISCISSORS-60™ significantly reduced OASIS when used compared to standard maternity scissors (1.88% incidence vs 6.23% incidence)
• Where maternity units use Episcissors-60 TM they significantly reduce the risk of OASIS compared to maternity units that use standard scissors (3.58% vs 6.31%)
• Assuming a risk ratio of 0.58 in all vaginal deliveries, using EPISCISSORS-60™ would result in 12,600 fewer OASIS - a saving of £20.5m per year in direct OASIS repair costs in England.

NEW ADVICE from NHS England on how to claim the
Innovation and Technology tariff (ITT) for hospitals in England.
To reduce Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASIS), and support the adoption of EPISCISSORS-60™ across England, NHS Pricing communicated that NHS trusts will now be reimbursed for 40 uses (rather than 20 uses) for each pair of EPISCISSORS-60™ , over the two years of the Innovation and Technology Tariff (ITT) scheme. This means for every pair of EPISCISSORS-60™ purchased, 40 x £16 will be paid, totalling £640. With each pair of EPISCISSORS-60™ costing £389 (including VAT and shipping), additional funding of £251 is available with each scissors purchased to support maternity units.
This would be a significant incentive to units with disposable birth packs, as they will now have spare funds available to fund standalone sterilisation costs for the EPISCISSORS-60™ . We encourage all units to make of the most of this offer as soon as possible, as stocks are limited. Please contact us for business case templates, or any other assistance”
Hospitals should complete the minimum data set (MDS) and submit to Arden and Gem CSU as per the guidance document. This provides NHS England with the number of procedures they have done using the scissors which they then use to create a PO. The trust then invoices NHS England based on the PO number.
The world renowned York Economic Health Consortium’s analysis on the EPISCISSORS-60™ shows a 1,223% return on investment in year one itself.
